eBook Help

If you are new to eBooks on eLibraryNJ, we have a few tips to help get you started borrowing eBooks from MCLS.  First, we will take a look at how to download to some popular devices and then take a look at how to navigate the eLibraryNJ website.

The first thing you want to make sure to do is download and install any software you will need to check-out an eBook.  If you have a Kindle, Sony Reader WiFi or tablet, you do not need to download any software on your PC.  For all other devices, you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your PC, see the Adobe website to download.  In order to use the software, you will need a free Adobe account.  Nook users must make sure to use the same e-mail address and password that was used to register the nook or you will not be able to transfer titles to the nook.

For tablets and Smartphones, such as the iPad, you do not need a PC at all, but will need to download the OverDrive app from the App Store on iTunes or from the Android Market.  Use the app to find our library (search for Mercer County Library) and hit the star to make it your favorite and then the library name to go to the collection.  Be aware the library may show up with the old name, InfoLink – ListenNJ, in the library listings.  Once connected to the library, you can now check-out titles and download directly to the device.  You may also return titles early using the apps.

Sony WiFi users can hit the Public Library button on page two of the main menu to find eLibraryNJ and download titles directly to the device.  Directions will appear on the screen and you will be asked to enter your zip code.  Pick Mercer County Library System from the list, then ListenNJ - InfoLink and finally eBooks to search the collection.

Kindle users have a two-step checkout process to complete and the title will either download wirelessly or can be transferred to the Kindle using a USB cable.  The first step is to make sure the Kindle is connected to a WiFi network, as the wireless transfer cannot be done over the 3G network.  To verify you are using WiFi, look to the upper right hand corner of the screen and you should see either WiFi or 3G.  If you need to switch to a WiFi network, please consult the Amazon help pages to see how to connect your model, as each model is different.  If you cannot connect to a WiFi network, you will need to connect the Kindle to the PC via USB to transfer titles.  Instructions for connecting via USB for the various Kindle models can be found on the Amazon help pages.  Once the Kindle is on WiFi or connected to the PC, use a PC to browse the eLibraryNJ collection and complete the check-out process.  After completing the eLibraryNJ check-out, click the Get for Kindle button and you will be directed to the Amazon page for the title, where you need to click the Get Library Book button and select the Kindle to which you wish to download the title.  WiFi delivery is instant; follow Amazon’s directions for transferring via USB.  If you wish to return a title, use a PC to log on to your Amazon account and go to the Manage My Kindle page.  To the right of the titles you have checked out will be an option to Return Library Book, click it to return the title.

For all other eReaders, including the nook and older Sony Readers, first connect the device to your PC with a USB cable.  Next, check-out a title on eLibraryNJ and click the Download button.  In Internet Explorer, pick Open at the prompt.  On other browsers, click the file name after the download finishes.  This should open Adobe Digital Editions in the reading view for that title.  Look in the upper left hand corner and switch to the library view (icon of three books or pick library from drop-down).  You will now see the cover art on the right and to the left will be a list of bookshelves with your connected device in the list.  Click and drag the title you wish to transfer from the cover art side and drop it onto the device on the left side.  Close ADE and properly disconnect the device from the computer.

Now let’s explore the eLibraryNJ website.  First, sign in using the link at the top of the page, in the gold area.  Logging on will allow you to see the Add to Cart or Place a Hold link on all of the titles.  You’ll need to pick Mercer County Library System from the drop-down and then enter your library barcode number.  Once logged on, you can browse using the lists on the main page, use the quick search box or use the advanced search to find titles.

The advanced search can be found under the options for the quick search and has a few aspects that make it very useful.  First, you do not need to enter any keywords in the blank boxes at the top of the search form, which allows you to retrieve full lists of eBooks by subject or format.  If you want a list of all the eBooks in the system, pick either Kindle or all eBooks (includes ePub and PDF, the formats used on all readers except Kindle) in the format drop-down and click the search button.  Of course the search works best if you narrow it a little by picking a subject from the drop-down.  One neat feature of the subject drop-down is that fiction and non-fiction are listed as broad categories, as well as more specific genres, such as biography or romance..  Also note toward the bottom of the form, you can restrict to items added over the last few weeks or months and there is also a check-box to select titles with copies available.

Finally, this is just a getting started guide and there are a few avenues available for more help.  If you look to the left on the eLibraryNJ page, you should see the Getting Started box.  There will be a link to lists of compatible eReaders and audiobook devices as well as a few different help options.  My Help! is a guided help source that will ask you a few questions and take you straight to the information you need without having to navigate menus.  For a full listing of help topics, click on the Help/FAQs button.  In addition to device and software help, this section also includes Borrowing Help, which explains how to do tasks such as cancel holds and lists the circulation rules for the service (number of checkouts allowed, etc.).  If the help sections don’t answer your questions, you can always contact us at the library.
