Tech Update @ MCLS

Mercer County Library System recently completed a renovation of the internet computers at all of our branches.  The new set-up brings more flexibility, more programs and two new services to our patrons.  PC users can now edit photos, scan and print in color.

Paint Shop Pro X2 has been added to each of the public access internet PCs.  The program is similar to PhotoShop Elements and provides the user with a full suite of digital photo editing options, ranging from basic tasks such as cropping to more advanced tools such as object removal and artistic filters.

Google Earth, Google Chrome, and OverDrive Media Console have also been added to the computers.  With Google Earth, patrons can view photographic maps of the world.  Google Chrome adds another web browser option for patrons, joining Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari.  The OverDrive Media Console will allow patrons to download and listen to audiobooks from the library's digital collection or transfer them to most mp3 players.

In addition to the new software for patron use, new security software has been installed that allows the user greater access to the settings to help make the PCs more user friendly.  Patrons can now adjust the volume, screen resolution, contrast settings, watch DVDs or turn on accessibility tools.  The new security settings also allow users to access My Computer and automatically will allow USB devices to install.  All changed settings will return to a normal state, and any saved files are erased, once the user ends their computer session.

A scanner has been added to the 20 minute express PC at each branch.  The scanners can be used to scan documents directly to PDF and can also scan photos, negatives and slides up to 4800 dpi.  All files can be transferred to a USB device, e-mailed, uploaded or printed at the library.

Color printing is also now available at all branches.  The color laser printers produce a sharp image and printouts cost 50 cents per page.
