DVDs Please

Don’t subscribe to HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, or any of the other fabulous channels that we all hear about? Neither does my family! In fact, we seem to be restricted from many channels that we thought were included in our basic package….but that is a story for another time! We play "catch up" by waiting for the season to come out on DVD and take them out from the library. It is the best way to watch a series - on your schedule, not the networks’! Hit pause and play at your leisure for popcorn and bathroom breaks! Have to pick up the kids? No problem! Just pause and restart it when you are ready!

My Recommendations:

Crime/Detective

Dexter, HomeLand, Breaking Bad, Ray Donovan, iZombie, Criminal Minds, all of the CSI series, and Orange is the New Black, are all great, but my all-time favorite in this category is 24.

24 is a series starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer. He is the head of field ops for the elite CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit). Each episode takes place in a 24 hour period and each episode is action-packed and edge-of-your seat exciting! The series ended in 2010, but was followed up with an equally exciting movie.

Ray Donovan. If you liked 24, you will LOVE Ray Donovan! It has completed its third season and will return in 2016 with season 4. Ray, played by Liev Schreiber, is a highly paid professional “fixer” for the rich and famous in LA.

His dysfunctional but oddly likable family makes this one a5 baseball bats(5 baseball bats out of 5).

Comedy

The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, That '70s Show, iCarly, Victorious, Modern Family, and The Big Bang Theory are all favorites in our family.

The Big Bang Theory rivals Modern Family for my top spot for 2015! Both are hysterically funny but in very different ways. I am currently watching season 7 of The Big Bang Theory and find myself laughing out loud at every episode!

I give both(5 laughs out of 5).

Sci-Fi/Horror

The Vampire Diaries, Sleepy Hollow, Grimm, Supernatural, Teen Wolf, American Horror Story, Ash vs. Evil Dead, and Doctor Who are all worth watching, but nothing beats The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead. Each season, the one show we cannot wait for to be released on DVD is The Walking Dead! You may not be a zombie fan, but you do not need to be! Imagine a show about the end of humanity….an apocalypse! Sad, depressing and does not sound like much fun. Now imagine it with ZOMBIES! This show appeals to my whole family, from my 10 year old niece to my 70 year old dad! The Walking Dead has it all! Zombies, heroes, underdogs, romance, comedy, miracles, love, hate, jealousy, respect, bromance, caring, and of course the old “survival of the fittest” trope! There are cliff hangers in every season which keep you guessing and always give you something to talk about with fellow fans.

5 brains(5 brains out of 5)

Fear the Walking Dead is a spinoff of The Walking Dead. Its first season recently ended and the show will start up again next summer. This series focuses on the zombie outbreak and its immediately aftermath on the west coast. Rumor has it, each season will feature different people in different locales. However, there may not be closure for fans who have developed an interest in this season’s characters. For this reason I only give:

3 brains(3 brains out of 5)

iZombie, done in comic book style, recently finished its first season in 2015. No apocalypse here! The zombies in this story are functioning in society while trying to hide that they are dead. Their biggest drawback is their diet mainly consists of human brains! This zombie crime series is a lot of fun for the whole family.

4 brains(4 brains out of 5)

American Horror Story is currently in its 5th season and always has fabulous actors such as Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett & Emma Roberts. Each season focuses on different characters and locations – think of them almost as individual mini-series with a beginning, middle and end.

4 clowns(4 clowns out of 5)
