Are We There Yet? Kids’ Media Items to Make Your Car Ride a Breeze

The holidays are just around the corner and our mouths are watering for favorite homemade dishes. We look forward to getting together with family and friends for another year of great memories when, all of a sudden, we remember that 3 hour car trip to grandma’s house!  With the kids!  How can we keep them entertained in the backseat so that we do not lose our sanity before talking with Great Aunt Mildred?

That is where the library comes in!  When most people think of libraries, the first thing they think of is books. If you have a child who gets carsick easily or one who is not reading yet, print books are not the way to pass the time on a long car ride. Thankfully we offer a variety of audio/visual materials to entertain and educate your child.

One of our most recent additions to children’s multimedia is the “Vox Book.” Vox books are like traditional read-alongs where your child can follow along on the page as the story is read out loud. However, Vox books have a built-in audio player instead of a CD, which is increasingly helpful as CD players in homes and cars are not as common as they once were. The built-in audio player allows the child to start, stop, and pause the story as well as turn the page and adjust the volume (do not worry – there is a headphone jack on the audio player, too).

Each of our branches has a different selection of Vox book titles ranging from fiction titles (Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs and The Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka-Dot Pants) to non-fiction (Let's Look At Earthworms and Helicopters).

In addition to Vox books, each library has an array of “Playaway Views,” which are handheld devices that are pre-loaded with media content, such as TV shows (My Little Pony, Friendship Is Magic and Sesame Song Hits!) or animated readings of children’s books (Hi! Fly Guy and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Other Stories for the Very Young). Your child can listen to a Playaway View with headphones as well and the device is not connected to the internet, so he/she can only access the pre-loaded material.

Playaway Views and Vox Books are sure to be a hit with your younger child. For older children and teens, the simply named “Playaway” audio book will be a good way to pass the time and, perhaps, catch up on some language arts homework. The Playaway is a handheld device with a preloaded audiobook. All you need is a pair of headphones and a “AAA” battery and you are all set to enjoy great titles like these:

I Funny: School of Laughs by James Patterson

The Hammer of Thor: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan

Once and For All by Sarah Dessen

Zero Hour by Pittacus Lore

Search the catalog for Vox Books or Playaway View, or ask at your local branch for more details. Happy travelling!
