Painted Rocks

There has been a new movement sweeping towns across America spreading love and smiles along the way.  Random acts of kindness are being encountered through painted rocks.  People find smooth rocks, paint them with a picture or a quotation, and then hide them around town for others to find.  Painting, hiding and finding rocks is a fun hobby that gives everyone a chance to get involved.

Because of the popularity of painting rocks, there are many Facebook groups dedicated to the painted rock movement.  These groups help guide, support and share in the fun.  On the back of each rock are the names of the artists and groups they belong to.  When a rock is found, the finder can post a picture of the rock on the Facebook page of the painters’ group. Then the rock is ready to be hidden again for another person to find. This one small, tiny gesture can brighten someone’s world and bring happiness to their day.

The rock designs are unique. They include flowers, pets, cartoon characters as well as many other themes.  Rocks can be hidden in parks, playgrounds, shopping centers, schools; the locations are endless.   When it comes time to paint the rocks, acrylic paint is suggested. Also, participants recommend sealing it with an acrylic spray to prevent any damage to the art on the rock.

Painting rocks is a great activity for craft lovers and for families who want to spend time together.  For adults, it can also be used as a therapeutic activity.  For my family, it has turned into a fun “treasure hunt” whenever we go out.  We are constantly looking to find new painted rocks.  And the smiles my family has when they do find one, are priceless.  Painting rocks can also inspire children to want to go outside and play rather than focusing on TV or electronic devices inside.  For such a small, simple activity, it has a great impact on everyone involved and the community as a whole.

Below are a few how-to books within the Mercer County Library System to assist with painting rocks.
