Knitting With Help: Books, Groups, Web

If you are thinking of learning to knit, improving your knitting ‘chops’, or taking up knitting after a longish break, then check out all these resources – books, magazines, DVD’s, knitting groups, and the web.

Let’s start with the Mercer County Library System:

Knitting Groups at the Library
On our library programs site, you can find four regularly meeting knitting groups (and sometimes with crocheting):

Yarnworks (Ewing Branch – every Wednesday at 7:00 PM)
Presented by Lee Pellegrino. Join fellow knitters and crocheters and tackle a new project or work on one you’ve already started.

Knitting Group (Hopewell Branch – every Wednesday at 7:00 PM)
Bring your current needle-craft project and join us for an hour of knitting (or crocheting...or needle-craft of your choice!) No registration necessary. CONTACT:  Hopewell Programs 609-737-2610 or hopeprogs@mcl.org

Knitting Circle (Lawrence Branch – every Wednesday at 7:00 PM)
Knitters who already know the basics are invited to drop in to socialize with other knitters and work on a project of their choice. Experienced knitter Helene Plank will be available to assist individuals. Registration is suggested.  CONTACT:  Lawrence Programs 609-883-8294 or lawprogs@mcl.org

Knit & Crochet Circle (West Windsor Branch – every Friday at 2:00)
Meets every Friday. Bring yarn, and hook or needles, to start or continue your project. Has materials on hand for those just starting out.  All adults are welcome, whatever skill level!  No need to register, just stop in.  CONTACT:  Email: dbeebe@mcl.org or mbaker@mcl.org

Knitting Groups Meeting Elsewhere
For many more knitting resources, including groups, check out Ravelry

Ravelry describes itself as “a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, weavers and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools, project and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration. The content here is all user-driven; we as a community make the site what it is. Ravelry is a great place for you to keep notes about your projects, see what other people are making, find the perfect pattern and connect with people who love to play with yarn from all over the world in our forums...”

And on Ravelry you can find knitting groups that meet in your area.  Here is a selection of informal knitting groups listed on Ravelry that meet in Mercer County. The entries may not be up to totally up to date – but you can investigate:

SKEIN MAVENS: THE NJSNB

https://www.ravelry.com/groups/skein-mavens-the-njsnb

According to Skein Mavens: “Beginning January 2017, we will be meeting at Wegmans on Wednesdays. Tuesday meetings will remain at Panera.

Welcome to the Ravelry home of the Skein Mavens, formerly NJSnB! We are a Mercer County-based knitting group with friendly, gregarious knitters (and crocheters, spinners, and other crafty sorts) that meets weekly to knit (or crochet or spin or…you get the idea) and chat.

Our knitters possess a wide range of experience and a love for a variety of projects. You don’t have to be a “dyed in the wool” sweater knitter…novelty yarn, cotton, acrylic, merino, felting, sock knitters… all are welcome. We do charity knitting, stash swaps, show and tells of great knitting books and love to admire each other’s projects and get new ideas.

Our meeting schedule is as follows: 1st, 3rd, 5th Tuesday of every month (Panera); 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month (Wegmans).”

TRENTON KNIT N STITCH

https://www.ravelry.com/groups/trenton-knit-n-stitch-nj

“Come cross needles with Trenton’s one and only knit/crochet group! We are a family friendly group that likes to sit around chatting while working on our latest projects. We meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month in Trenton, NJ at Classics Bookstore located at 4 Lafayette, directly across from the Wyndham Hotel. We laugh a lot, learn a lot from our advanced ravelers and genuinely have a great time! (there is a Yahoo group and a Facebook group for Trenton Knit N Stitch)”

P'TON KNITTERS

https://www.ravelry.com/groups/pton-knitters-2

“This group is a gathering place for Princeton-area knitters and our friends to keep in touch. Ask questions, share ideas, and let's have fun chatting about our knitting experiences.

Our place on Ravelry is to keep up with happenings of the knitting community based around Princeton, NJ and our friends - Princeton Adult School Knitters, HomeFront Knitters, Friends of HomeFront …from around the country and the world.

This is a place for us to share pictures of projects, patterns, and generally keep in touch and make plans when we’re not knitting together. A place to share ideas, ask questions, find inspiration about knitting, continually learning, and exploring one’s passions to the fullest.”

WEST WINDOSR PLAINSBORO YARN INVADERS

https://www.ravelry.com/groups/west-windsor-plainsboro-yarn-invaders

“A group of yarn enthusiasts who meet regularly at Grover's Mill Coffee in West Windsor, NJ.

As this is a new group, we don’t have a set time yet. New members, please join and tell us when you’d like to meet to knit/crochet/spin and chat!

If you find this group and it looks dead, please post anyway! I’m at the coffee shop really often and I’d love some company even if this group doesn’t take off!

Grover’s Mill Coffee is themed around the Orson Wells radio drama The War of the Worlds, which was set in Grover’s Mill, NJ. They serve delicious coffee (roasted daily on site) and tea, as well as soups, sandwiches, and a variety of pastries. They also have lots of cute alien memorabilia in their café and a generally great atmosphere for knitting and crocheting!”

How to Knit Socks that Fit: Techniques for Toe-Up and Cuff-Down Styles
by Donna Druchunas

Druchunas' detailed instructions and a two-pattern narrative that steps novices through every knit and purl, the reasons for DIY socks become even more compelling. No photographs here; on the other hand, the illustrations appear when words just might need a lift. Everything under the sock universe is included; her comprehensive how-to begins with an in-depth examination of yarns and needles to sock anatomy and heel and toe variations. Plenty of professional advice is offered. For instance, consider using a lifeline (a string pulled through all stitches) to stabilize knitting. And plain stockinette stitches through the sole, heel, and foot's top will result in less bulky socks. A book that lives up to its title and billing as books for self-reliance.” --Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2015 Booklist

VINTAGE KNITTING PATTERNS

We have several books on this topic. Here’s one:

Knitting It Old School: 43 Vintage-Inspired Patterns
by Stitchy McYarnpants
 ISBN 9780470524664
"44 patterns inspired by the '40s, '50s, '60s, and '70s Knitters love all things vintage-but it's not as easy as picking up an old pattern from decades past. Oftentimes, they use obsolete yarns, aren't sized for today's body shapes, and are written differently than current pattern instructions. Now, retro-minded crafters get the best of both worlds in this unique collection. Drawing from the fashion trends of the '40s through the '70s, Knitting it Old School offers a bold new twist on vintage-inspired knitting patterns. Vintage patterns feature newly created designs that flatter today's figure and use contemporary yarns. Fun, wearable patterns that echo styles of days gone by. Four bonus sewing patterns to whip up complimentary vintage-themed accessories. With a balance of classic and kitsch, wardrobe basics and saucy specials, Knitting it Old School is a breath of fresh air for knitters who love "old" but want to be "new."-- Provided by publisher.
