More About Mercer County Government

Last month we took a look at the main county website and all of the valuable information that can be found there.  Some of the county government departments also run their own websites, which are linked from the main county site.   Here is a look at the other county websites and the programs and services offered by the departments.

Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office

The Prosecutor’s Office runs 19 different units that are responsible for prosecuting crimes in the county.  The website includes information on all the units, as well as unsolved crimes, fugitives, press releases, and an archive of annual reports on the department’s activities.  The resources page includes information on the additional services run by the department.  These include services to help witnesses and victims cope after a crime, tips for parents about kids/teens and internet safety, and information on how to expunge a juvenile record.

Mercer County Technical Schools

Career Technical Education for high school students and adults.  The website includes current course offerings, scholarship information, information on admissions, resources for current students, and summer camp registration and information.  The school offers career prep programs for high school students that want to work in a trade, culinary arts, beauty, STEM, and health sciences.  For adults, evening school classes are offered in the trades and health sciences, as well as apprenticeship programs.  The summer camp is for middle school students, with camps for beauty, babysitting/child care, coding, construction, making cupcakes and desserts, environmental science, graphic design, cooking, law and public safety, robotics, and digital media.

Mercer County Community College

Like the tech schools, the website is oriented toward current and potential students, with program and course guides, resources for students, financial aid information, and campus news.  The college does also offer resources for non-students, such as an online career coach with an assessment test and career information catalog.  The school offers a selection of non-credit courses, seminars, and scheduled activities.  For example, there are courses in CPR and first aid, aquatics classes, cooking, floral design, computers, and art.  In addition to offering classes, the college has a host of community programs.  County residents are welcome to use the library, pool, fitness center, visit the art gallery, or take in a performance at Kelsey Theatre.

Mercer County Improvement Authority

New Jersey has a law allowing for the creation of improvement authorities, which are groups designed to help bridge public and private financing of certain types of projects.  The MCIA helps governments and non-profits plan and finance capital improvement projects as well as runs the county recycling program and waste disposal.  MCIA provides recycling buckets, guides to recycling, schedules, and runs special hazardous waste (household chemicals and electronics) collection days at locations around the county.

Mercer County Parks Commission

The Parks Commission is responsible for planning and running the county parks.  The parks system consists of eight parks and 17 facilities within those parks.  The largest park is Mercer County Park in Hamilton/West Windsor and includes a marina and lake, ice skating rink, tennis center, dog park, festival grounds, cross country course, mountain bike trail, jogging trail, biking trail, basketball courts, volleyball courts, picnic area, and fields for baseball, softball, soccer, football, lacrosse, Frisbee, disc golf, and cricket.  Mercer Meadows is located in Lawrence/Hopewell and includes lakes for boating and trails for passive recreation, such as biking, running, and walking.  There are also bird and astronomy observation areas.  Parks runs a variety of other facilities, including a wildlife rehabilitation center, equestrian center, four golf courses, the Howell Living History Farm, and Arm & Hammer Park, home of the Trenton Thunder.  Almost every park offers a full slate of programming, such as summer camps and special events.  Most also give lessons, tours, birthday parties, educational outreach, and rentals so check each facility to see what they offer.  The wildlife center’s page includes fact sheets on a long list of common suburban wildlife – the sheets contain information about the animal as well as how to keep them off your property or reduce damage.
