It’s Okay to Read YA

Have you ever wanted to check out a book that has everything you look for in a book? Only to find out that it is a young adult (YA) book? Have you felt embarrassed? That you shouldn’t be interested in a YA book because you’re an adult? Well, I am here to tell you that you should never feel ashamed about being interested in YA books.

Why would an adult want to read a YA book? I have a few theories on this matter. One, I believe that adults read YA books because it takes some back to being a teenager and, for a moment, forgetting all of their problems. It is a way to escape from the pressures of the adult world and help them back to a time where they might not have to pay bills, worry about their jobs, and can spend time with friends again. That doesn’t mean that teenagers’ lives cannot be hard, just that it may be different enough from adult experiences to feel like a refuge for an adult.

An adult might read a YA book to feel better about themselves. The majority of YA books are coming of age, when the main character develops over a period of time both emotionally and physically from the beginning of the book to the end. Everyone has a coming of age story, and a good number of adults are still going though that period. When an adult reads a YA book, and it is a coming of age, it can help that adult reflect back to when they started to develop and grow. They can have time to reflect on their development and be happy with the person they’ve become.

Reading a YA book can also help adults, especially parents, connect with their teen family members about hard topics that might come up in discussion. There is a good majority of YA books, fiction and non-fiction, that tie into what is going on in teen lives, from the personal to pop culture. Some of the books that are being published touch on topics that are finally getting a spotlight, and being talked about among people of all ages. Reading YA books as an adult can help understand teenagers and what they might be going though socially.

YA books are for everyone’s enjoyment and benefit. So, if you are an adult and want to check out a YA book, do it with pride.
