Knitting in the Aisles

I host the Knitting (crochet, needlework, etc) Group at the West Windsor Branch (Fridays 2 – 3 pm). We generally meet in Room 1 – my favorite meeting room in the library – but sometimes I wish we could meet in aisle 9 of the non-fiction section, the one with the signs for Arts & Crafts, Photography, and Music.

It’s in this aisle that you will find the books about fiber arts of all stripes. So often some topic comes up in the group discussion that just calls for a dip into a book or two – and Room 1 and aisle 9 are so far apart!

This is where Vogue Knitting lives – one of the classic knitting references. If you have a question or are just looking for ideas, it’s a great place to start.

And a lot of pattern books. There are books for knitting and/or crocheting socks and shawls and sweaters and home goods – you name it and there are books for it.

I get a big kick out of the specialized ones. You probably know a kid who would love something from Knitting Magic or have a friend who might be tickled by something from Outlander Knitting

With the books in this aisle – as in our Friday group – it’s not JUST knitting. For instance, the conversation last week rolled around to needle felting. If we had been meeting in aisle 9 we could have turned to Woolbuddies

Some of the members of the group also do quilting, and my favorite quilting title of all time is Flossie Teacakes’ Guide to English Paper Piecing. I don’t quilt, but I love seeing this book on the shelf!

We have a lot of crocheters in the group. I don’t crochet at the moment, but I am going to learn – soon. I can hear the group snickering, I have been saying this for a while now.

I might start with Crochet Step by Step  - it’s currently making an appearance in the New Book section, but it will come home to aisle 9 soon enough!

Sometimes people bring in a hand sewing project or some mending – we have books for that too.  Mending Matters lives in aisle 7 – what can I say? – we get around!

Lots of good stuff in aisle 7 – the signs are: Pets, Cook Books & Home Improvement.

Some of the projects are too bulky to bring in on a Friday - lugging a sewing machine around is a bit much – but if you can throw your project in a tote bag, please join us!

We will be meeting in Room 1 – aisle 9 would be very crowded and there aren’t any chairs – but maybe we’ll take a field trip one of these days!
