Dear Tech Guru

Dear Tech Guru,

I’ve been in a group chat with my family for the last few years. It has been a great way to keep in touch. I can keep up with the flow of talk, food, and scenery pictures, but feel left out that I haven’t mastered the selfie. I’m going on my first vacation in a while, and I want to be able to send some lovely photos and a few selfies.

Selfie Help Needed

Hi Selfie,

I understand the pleasure of sending a photo to a group chat to show off your view, whether it’s a stunning sunset, a cute dog, or that delicious dinner you’re eating. A selfie is also great for showing off your location at a given moment.

The biggest challenge is keeping hold of your phone. It seems like it would be so easy to hold your phone at arm’s length and hit the shutter button on your screen; however, it’s not. Getting something like a grip or a selfie stick can help with this. The selfie stick is also helpful for group shots or if you have short arms.

Most newer smartphones have two cameras. Many people use the front-facing camera, which is the one that is just above your phone screen. Using this camera allows you to see yourself. Using the back camera is a bit harder, but it will get you a better-quality photo.

Once you are comfortable holding the phone, finding the best angle and lighting is essential. Most resources tell you to keep your phone at eye level and ensure the sun is behind you. You’ll also want to be aware of the background; while you want to be in the shot, you also want to show off the scenery.

The last, most crucial step is making sure you’re safe. Don’t risk your safety for a good selfie.

The Mercer County Library System has a few resources to help you take better selfies and photos with your smartphone.
