Summer Fantasy Adventures

There’s nothing quite like escaping into a good book. A good cup of tea under a cozy blanket with my latest read is the perfect way to spend a lazy Saturday morning and, in my humble opinion, the best way to live through hundreds of dangerous adventures happening between the pages. You know, without all the actual life-threatening parts. Or mosquitos. I’m always happy to skip mosquitos.

Here’s some of my favorite adventures to read:

Legends and Lattes

- Part of the Cozy Fantasy trend, Legends and Lattes is about an orc who decides to retire from her adventures and open a coffee shop instead. She has a lot to learn about running a business, and will have to figure out how to deal with the local gang who wants a cut of her profits.

The Invisible Library

- A library that exists between all worlds, and librarians tasked with retrieving one-of-a-kind books from every world. This is book one of a completed seven book series, and it will have you racing through Victorian England with vampires, werewolves, and a dragon shifter companion.

A Darker Shade of Magic

- There are three Londons (well, technically four, but we don’t talk about the burned out Black London) each with different degrees of magic. Only special mages can travel between these Londons, and they act as messengers between the leaders of each London to ensure their worlds’ stability. Until the mage from Red London is attacked in our world, Grey London, the least magical London of the bunch, and gets the tokens he needs to open the doorway home stolen by a local thief.

Assistant to the Villain

- Even villains need secretaries! And really, once you get past the torture and general villainous activities, it’s a pretty sweet deal. It helps when your boss is easy on the eyes. And walks you home after an unexpected bomb goes off at work. And then spends a lot of time with you to root out the spy working for him. But seriously, it’s nothing but a professional relationship.

The Bone Spindle

- Sleeping Beauty is a prince in this fairy tale retelling, and his princess charming is a treasure hunter who picked up the wrong cursed item one day and can now see the prince’s ghost while he sleeps in his curse. The only way to sever the tie between them is to wake up the prince, and the only way to wake him up is to fight her way through the thorn forest that now surrounds his castle. The one filled with dangerous monsters and death traps to prevent anyone from doing exactly this.

The House in the Cerulean Sea

- In a world of magical creatures, special orphanages exist to take care of the orphaned ones. One orphanage in particular is housing a very special six-year-old, and this world’s version of social services is keeping a very close eye on things. They send an agent to stay at the home for a month to observe and report back, and the agent is learning all kinds of things while he’s there. First and foremost, social services is keeping a lot of secrets. Number two, the six-year-old antichrist is an adorable little boy with a flair for the dark and dramatic, but he’s still a six-year-old who does his chores like anyone else. And number three, he maybe kind of likes it here at this house.

Iron Widow

- Similar to Pacific Rim, this world utilizes giant mech suits to fight off alien invaders. The catch is that the mech suits need two pilots to be mentally synced to each other, and battling like that can sometimes kill a copilot. Such was the fate of Wu’s older sister, and now Wu is enlisting to avenge her sister. She succeeds, but that success has labelled her as dangerous. As consequence, she’s paired with a conscripted criminal in the hopes that one of them dies in the next battle. They not only survive, their relationship starts to blossom. Unfortunately for them, the government isn’t done trying to get rid of them yet.

Howl’s Moving Castle

- Sophie always felt she was an old soul trapped in a younger woman’s body, but that doesn’t mean she’s thrilled to be cursed to look like an old lady. Her best chance at breaking the spell lies with the great wizard Howl and his moving castle, but the curse prevents her from telling anyone about it. So, she applies to be Howl’s new cleaning lady and hopes things eventually work themselves out.
