Voices from the Teen Advisory Board: Why Libraries Matter: A Teen’s Perspective
Voices from the Teen Advisory Board
Throughout the year, we like to share essays by members of the Mercer County Library System Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB members help with programming, suggest books for purchase, and create the quarterly TAB magazine. This month, Kanishkha Duna writes about the valuable role libraries have played in her life.
Why Libraries Matter: A Teen’s Perspective
Hey! I’m Kanishkha Duna, a freshman at Robbinsville High School. If you had told me a few years ago that I’d end up spending so much time at the library, I probably would’ve laughed. Back then, I didn’t really get what the big deal was. Sure, I knew the library had books, but I didn’t really see the appeal. Over time, though, I came to realize that libraries are so much more than just places full of books—they’re spaces to relax, to discover new things, and honestly, places where I’ve been able to reset after a tough school day.
How Libraries Have Helped Me
When I was younger, going to the library wasn’t really a regular thing for me. It wasn’t until I started needing a quiet place to study or escape the chaos at home that I started to spend more time there. At first, it wasn’t even about the books; it was more about the peace and quiet. But slowly, I began discovering the magic of getting lost in stories. Books became a way to take a break from school stress—whether it was an epic adventure or something as simple as a mystery novel.
Even now, when school feels overwhelming—hello, long days and surprise quizzes—the library is my go-to. It’s not just a place for books anymore; it’s where I can find space to breathe, focus, and get away from all the noise.
Why Reading for Fun is Important
I get it, reading for school can feel like a chore sometimes. But reading for fun? That’s a whole other thing. A good book is like an escape—like a time machine that transports you somewhere else, or even like a friend who just gets you. Reading for fun has helped me develop empathy, understand different perspectives, and gain some unexpected life lessons.
Some of my favorite moments have been discovering the perfect book at just the right time. Like when I found a mystery novel right before a snowstorm and spent the whole day reading with hot chocolate in hand. Or when I picked up a book about strong female leaders that inspired me to think more about my future. Books have this way of showing up when you need them most.
My Experience on the Teen Advisory Board
I’m still pretty new to the Teen Advisory Board (TAB), but I’m really glad I joined. At first, I wasn’t sure if I belonged. I didn’t know anyone, and I felt a little out of place. But as soon as I walked into the first meeting, I was welcomed with open arms. The other members are passionate about books and libraries, and it didn’t take long for me to feel like part of the group.
I may still be learning the ropes, but with TAB I’ve already had the chance to help plan events, come up with activities, and figure out ways to make the library more fun and inviting for teens. I’ve learned new skills like teamwork, leadership, and event planning, and honestly, the best part is being able to talk about books with people who get just as excited about them as I do.
Why Libraries Are Still Important
Some people think libraries aren’t necessary anymore because of the internet, but let’s be real—Google can’t replace the experience of flipping through a real book or stumbling across something you never expected to find. Libraries offer free access to resources, a quiet space to study, and, most importantly, a sense of community. Whether through book clubs, events, or just the shared love of reading, libraries bring people together.
Final Thoughts
Joining TAB has made me appreciate libraries so much more. They’re not just places to check out books—they’re places to grow, learn, and connect with others. I hope this post inspires you to visit your local library, pick up a book, or even join a program. You never know what might become your new favorite spot.
So, if it’s been a while since you’ve been to a library, go check one out! You never know what adventures might be waiting for on the shelves.
